Australia offers a range of opportunities for international students who pursue vocational education, particularly in sectors such as automotive, hospitality, building construction, and other skilled trades. However, navigating the transition from student to skilled worker can be complex. At SkillReady Solutions, we help students understand the requirements for Temporary Residency (TR) and guide them through the Job Ready Program (JRP), leading to skill assessment completion and visa applications.

English Language Requirements for Temporary Residency (TR)

For many international students, the first hurdle to obtaining a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is meeting the English language requirement. To apply, you must demonstrate competent English through recognized tests such as IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL. Here's a quick overview of the minimum scores required:

  • IELTS: Overall 6.0 (with no individual band less than 5.0)

  • PTE Academic: Overall 50 (with no communicative skill below 36)

  • TOEFL iBT: Total score of 64 (with minimum scores in Reading: 4, Listening: 4, Speaking: 14, Writing: 14)

For further information on acceptable English language tests, you can visit the https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/ (Department of Home Affairs website).

Qualifications & TRA PSA Requirements

To apply for Temporary Residency, international students must hold a relevant qualification from an Australian Registered Training Organization (RTO) along with CRICOS Accredited Organization . This must align with occupations listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). For trades like automotive or building construction, the Trade Recognition Australia (TRA) process is critical.

The Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) is the first step of the TRA pathway for recent graduates. It involves submitting evidence of your qualification and relevant work experience. The PSA confirms your ability to meet the industry standards in your chosen trade.

More information on TRA’s assessment pathways can be found on their official TRA page https://www.tradesrecognitionaustralia.gov.au/

Job Ready Program (JRP) and Skill Assessment

Once the Provisional Skills Assessment is completed, international students can begin the Job Ready Program (JRP). The JRP consists of four key stages:

  1. Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) – Verifies your skills to work in Australia.

  2. Job Ready Employment (JRE) – Demonstrates employment in a relevant trade in Australia.

  3. Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA) – Assesses your skills in a real-world work environment.

  4. Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA) – Confirms you meet Australian industry standards.

At SkillReady Solutions, we offer comprehensive training to help you succeed in your workplace assessment and prepare for technical interviews.

For more details on JRP, visit the https://www.tradesrecognitionaustralia.gov.au/ TRA JRP page.

Using Your Skill Assessment for Visa Applications

Upon completing the Job Ready Program and receiving your full skills assessment, you’ll have multiple visa options, including:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) – Allows skilled workers to fill labor shortages in Australia.

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – A points-tested visa for those without sponsorship.

  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) – Requires nomination by a state or territory government.

Each visa has its own criteria and process, which you can explore on the  https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/  (Department of Home Affairs website). The skill assessment is a critical step, ensuring your qualifications are recognized for migration purposes.
